Punjab Deploys Advanced Anti-Drone System to Combat Cross-Border Trafficking

by Parminder Singh Sodhi

In a decisive move to curb the escalating threat of cross-border smuggling via drones, Punjab is set to acquire a state-of-the-art counter-drone system to safeguard its border regions. The initiative, undertaken in close consultation with central agencies, aims to thwart the illicit trafficking of drugs, weapons, and explosives entering the state from Pakistan.

A trial run of the integrated system took place at Naushehra Dhalla, a border village notorious for drone activity. The demonstration, attended by Cabinet ministers Aman Arora and Laljit Singh Bhullar, as well as top security officials including Special DGP RN Dhoke and ADGP Sudhanshu Srivastava, showcased the new technology’s potential to revolutionize border security.

The innovative system, developed by Adani Defence and Aerospace, is designed to detect any unauthorized flying device within a 10 km radius. Its dual operational modes—directional and omni-directional—allow for the simultaneous tracking and neutralization of multiple drones. During the demonstration, officials witnessed the system accurately pinpointing the drone’s direction and radio frequency, followed by an effective signal jamming process to immobilize the threat.

“Today’s trial at Naushehra Dhalla marks a significant step in strengthening Punjab’s defence capabilities against a growing menace,” said Minister Aman Arora. The system is part of a broader strategy to reinforce Punjab’s second line of defence along its border belt, particularly as areas like Tarn Taran and Amritsar have seen a sharp rise in drone intrusions leading to substantial seizures of drugs and weapons.

Recent statistics underscore the urgency of this initiative. In 2024, the Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted 294 drones along the Punjab border—a stark increase from 107 drones in 2023. Alarmingly, in just the past two months, the number of detected drone incursions has already exceeded 50, signaling an aggressive uptick in cross-border smuggling activities.

Prior to the Naushehra Dhalla trial, similar tests were conducted in Mohali, where three firms presented their counter-drone solutions. With the tendering process expected to commence within the next month, state officials are finalizing the selection of the most advanced and reliable technology provider.

As Punjab intensifies its efforts to secure its borders, the deployment of this advanced anti-drone system represents a critical leap forward in neutralizing high-tech smuggling operations. Security experts believe that such cutting-edge technology will not only disrupt current illegal activities but also act as a strong deterrent against future incursions, ensuring the safety and security of the region.
