3 Khalistani Extremists Convicted for Violent Attack on Sikh Radio Host in NZ

by Antariksh Singh

In a landmark decision, a New Zealand court has handed down convictions to three individuals identified as Khalistani extremists, marking the culmination of a disturbing case involving a brutal attack on a Sikh radio jockey. The incident, characterized by religious fanaticism and intolerance, has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted calls for heightened vigilance against such acts of violence.

The focal point of this shocking episode was Sarvjeet Sidhu, who has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison for attempted murder. The judge presiding over the case emphasized the gravity of the offense, describing it as bearing “all the hallmarks of religious fanaticism.” The sentencing decision was guided by the imperative to protect the community from further violence and send a resounding message of deterrence to potential offenders, as reported by the New Zealand Herald newspaper.

The prosecution presented a chilling account of the attack, detailing how Harnek Singh, the Sikh radio jockey, was pursued by three cars filled with men and ultimately stabbed “within an inch of his life.” Singh, in a desperate bid for survival, managed to lock the doors of his vehicle and sound the horn, drawing the attention of vigilant neighbors who intervened and potentially saved his life.

The court found Sukhpreet Singh, aged 44, guilty of being an “accessory to attempted murder” and sentenced him to six months of home detention. Another accomplice, an unnamed 48-year-old devoutly religious Auckland resident, received a severe 13-and-a-half-year prison sentence for orchestrating the attack. The judge noted that the mastermind harbored resentment against the radio host due to his political views and more liberal interpretation of their shared Sikh faith.

The horrific incident unfolded on December 23, 2020, when Harnek Singh was ambushed in his own driveway by a group of religious extremists. The assailants inflicted over 40 stab wounds, leaving him in critical condition. The subsequent recovery required over 350 stitches and multiple surgeries, according to reports from an Australian website.

This harrowing case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by religious fanaticism and underscores the importance of fostering tolerance and understanding within communities. The convictions send a clear message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated, and the justice system is committed to protecting individuals from the perils of extremism. As the affected community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking attack, there is a collective hope that this legal precedent will contribute to deterring future acts of intolerance and ensuring the safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs.
