From Punjab to Paris: LPU Campus Becomes Epicenter of Olympic Celebration

by Dr. Jasneet Bedi

Lovely Professional University (LPU) is abuzz with Olympic spirit as it marks the Paris Olympics 2024 with unparalleled excitement on campus. Although geographically distant from the Games, LPU has turned its campus into a vibrant celebration of athletic achievement, uniting students and faculty in a shared sense of pride and enthusiasm.

The campus is adorned with dynamic activities and live streaming sessions that bring the Olympic Games to the heart of the university. LPU has created an immersive experience for its community, ensuring that every moment of triumph, especially the notable success of Indian athletes, is celebrated with zeal.

A highlight of the celebration is the historic victory of the Indian hockey team at the Paris Olympics, where eight players from LPU played pivotal roles. The team’s exhilarating 3-2 win against Australia has secured them a spot in the quarterfinals. This victory is particularly significant as it marks India’s first win over Australia in the Olympics in 52 years.

To keep the Olympic fervor alive, a grand screen has been set up on campus, where students and visitors eagerly gather to watch live broadcasts of the matches. After classes, the screen becomes a hub of communal cheer, with students and faculty joining together to support their LPU representatives on the world stage.

The festive atmosphere is further enriched by a selfie booth featuring LPU students alongside Olympic stars like Javelin gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and other celebrated athletes. This interactive feature allows students to express their support and capture memorable moments of Olympic enthusiasm.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and founder Chancellor of LPU, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the students. Expressing his delight at their outstanding performances, Dr. Mittal conveyed his hopes for continued success and medals in the upcoming rounds.

LPU has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the second largest contingent at the Paris Olympics 2024, trailing only behind Stanford University. Out of 117 Indian athletes representing the nation, an impressive 24 hail from LPU, making up 21% of the Indian team.

Among the prominent LPU athletes are Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw, and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. The Indian hockey team includes LPU stars such as Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Shamsher Singh, and several others.

Other standout athletes from LPU include boxers Lovlina, Jaismine, and Preeti; wrestlers Anshu, Nisha, Vinesh, and Antim Panghal; and shooter Arjun Singh Cheema. Additionally, the university boasts talents like rower Balraj Panwar and archers Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tarun Deep Roy.

As LPU continues to celebrate the Paris Olympics with fervor and pride, the campus remains a beacon of Olympic spirit, showcasing the extraordinary achievements of its athletes and the university’s commitment to excellence in sports.
