India Raises Diplomatic Concerns Over Pro-Khalistani Activities in the West

by Harleen Kaur

In a recent round of high-level diplomatic engagements, Indian leadership has expressed serious concerns regarding pro-Khalistani separatist activities in both the United States and New Zealand. The discussions, conducted amid growing apprehensions over terrorism and extremist influences, underscored India’s commitment to combating all forms of separatism and radicalism.

During a bilateral conversation with New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the resurgence of anti-India activities on New Zealand soil. Modi recalled the painful memories of the 2019 Christchurch terror attack and the 26/11 Mumbai incidents, emphasizing that terrorism in any manifestation remains “unacceptable.” He urged New Zealand to take strict measures against those responsible for terrorist acts, insisting that robust cooperation was vital to curb the influence of illegal elements linked to separatist agendas.

“In this context, we shared our concern about anti-India activities by some illegal elements in New Zealand. We are confident that we will continue to get the cooperation of the New Zealand government against all these illegal elements,” Modi affirmed, reiterating India’s stance against terrorism and extremism.

Parallel to the New Zealand dialogue, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a significant meeting in New Delhi with US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The meeting, which lasted over 30 minutes at Singh’s office in Raisina Hills, focused on the activities of the Khalistani separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) on American soil. Singh pressed the US authorities to formally designate SFJ as a terrorist organization, citing evidence of the group’s alleged ties to Pakistan’s ISI and its purported collaboration with the Babbar Khalsa militant faction.

The Indian government’s twin diplomatic initiatives reveal a concerted effort to clamp down on cross-border extremist activities that threaten regional stability and strain international relations. As global attention increasingly shifts to the transnational dimensions of terrorism, India’s appeals to its allies signal a broader commitment to safeguarding its national interests and those of its diaspora communities worldwide.

By calling for decisive action against groups engaged in terrorism and separatism, New Delhi continues to advocate for international cooperation in the fight against extremist networks—a stance it deems essential for maintaining peace and security across borders.
