Amritsar, July 26 – Popular Punjabi singer Bir Singh on Friday personally visited the Akal Takht to offer an apology for his involvement in a controversial event that sparked outrage among Sikh institutions.

Singh met Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, expressing “deep regret” over the incident that many said hurt Sikh sentiments. According to the Jathedar, the singer approached the Akal Takht on his own, without being summoned, and showed “genuine remorse and a renewed commitment to Guru’s teachings.”

“The apology has been received and will be considered appropriately,” Gargaj said, adding that Singh’s voluntary acknowledgment of his mistake was a positive step.

The controversy arose after an event, reportedly featuring dance, music, and entertainment, was linked to themes of Sikh martyrdom—something Sikh institutions condemned as disrespectful. Gargaj reiterated that martyrdom holds a “sacred place in Sikh history,” and the way the programme was conducted violated Gurmat principles.

Taking a strong stance against government interference, Gargaj said, “The government and its Language Department must understand their limits. Organising Gurmat-based events or interfering in religious matters is not their domain. Sikh institutions are fully capable of conducting such programmes with the necessary reverence.”

The Akal Takht is expected to deliberate on Bir Singh’s apology in the coming days before announcing its decision.
