Mohali is set to transform into a vibrant hub of culture and craftsmanship as the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Administration launches its maiden Saras Mela from October 18 to 27. Positioned behind the Manav Mangal Smart School, the event promises to be a landmark celebration, drawing crowds and talent from across the nation.
The Saras Mela, renowned for its unique distinctions both domestically and internationally, will feature over 600 artisans operating 300 stalls. Visitors can anticipate a dazzling array of handicrafts, traditional artworks, and cultural exhibits, showcasing the rich diversity of India’s artistic heritage.
Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Aashika Jain, overseeing the preparations, expressed her enthusiasm during a site review. “Since our district’s establishment in 2006, we have eagerly awaited the opportunity to host such a grand fair. Saras Mela has been a staple in major cities, and bringing it to Mohali marks a significant milestone,” she remarked. Jain highlighted the participation of artists, artisans, and traders from multiple states, forecasting thousands of daily visitors eager for both shopping and entertainment.
The mela’s lineup boasts an impressive roster of performances. The inaugural evening on October 18 will feature the soulful tunes of Punjabi singer Ranjit Bawa, followed by Shivjot on the 19th. The 20th will see Pari Pandher, Basant Kur, and Savitaj Brar take the stage, alongside a vibrant fashion show. Comedy enthusiasts can look forward to a night with Jaspreet Singh and Ashish Solanki on October 21, while Lakhwinder Wadali headlines on the 22nd. University teams will energize the crowd with Bhangra and Gidha on the 23rd, and Joban Sandhu will perform on the 24th. The festival will culminate on October 27 with Kulwinder Billa and a grand finale featuring Gippy Grewal.
To ensure seamless execution, dedicated committees have been established, as noted by Deputy Commissioner Jain. “Our teams are working tirelessly to provide a memorable experience for all attendees,” she added. The mela also emphasizes inclusivity, offering free entry to students in school uniforms, while general admission is priced at Rs 20.
Beyond the main stage, daily entertainment will feature folk artists such as Bean Jogi, dancers, Nagara performers, puppet shows, Bazigar acts, and Kachi Ghodi performers, who will traverse the fairgrounds, engaging visitors with their talents. Additionally, theme-based programs will address social issues, fostering awareness and dialogue among attendees. Emerging artists from schools and colleges will also have the opportunity to showcase their skills, nurturing the next generation of talent.
A standout feature of the Saras Mela is the collaboration with the Northern Zone Cultural Centre. This partnership will bring an eclectic mix of folk dances from various states, including Assam’s Pihu, Rajasthan’s Kalbelia, Barsana’s Holi and Mayur dances from Uttar Pradesh, and traditional performances from Haryana and Punjab, enriching the cultural tapestry of the event.
The inauguration ceremony will be graced by notable officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Viraj S Tidke, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Sonam Chaudhary, SDM Mohali Damandeep Kaur, SDM Kharar Gurmander Singh, Chief Engineer of the Municipal Corporation Mohali Naresh Batta, and heads of various departments, underscoring the administration’s commitment to the mela’s success.
As Mohali prepares to welcome thousands to its first Saras Mela, the community anticipates a festival that not only entertains but also celebrates the rich cultural mosaic of India, fostering unity and appreciation through art and tradition.
