Demonstrating determination and endurance, a Ludhiana-based businessman has successfully completed the demanding Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon held at the iconic Pangong Lake in Ladakh.

Thirty-eight-year-old Sandeep Khurana emerged as the sole participant from Punjab in the unusual sporting event, which drew nearly 450 runners from across India and neighbouring Nepal. The marathon is considered one of the most challenging races due to its location at an altitude of about 4,350 metres (14,270 feet) and the harsh weather conditions, where temperatures drop to nearly –20°C.

Khurana completed the 21-kilometre half marathon in 2 hours and 57 minutes, marking his debut marathon. Despite the extreme environment and the difficulty of running on a frozen surface, he managed to finish the race with determination and resilience.

Calling the experience unforgettable, Khurana said running across the frozen expanse of Pangong Lake was unlike any other race. “It is something that cannot truly be described in words. You have to experience it to understand the feeling,” he said.

Interestingly, Khurana dedicated his participation in the marathon to veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, whom he admires deeply. During the race, he wore a special T-shirt bearing the actor’s photograph as a tribute.

His gesture caught the attention of actor Sunny Deol, who responded to Khurana’s Instagram post, congratulating him and sending his appreciation.

Khurana revealed that he trained for nearly two and a half months after deciding to participate in the event. Preparing for a marathon on a frozen lake required building stamina and adjusting to the challenging terrain and weather.

Before the race, all participants stayed in acclimatisation camps for eight days to adapt to the high altitude and extreme cold. During this period, organisers also conducted training sessions and shared essential safety tips to help runners cope with the demanding conditions.

Although he did not finish among the top three runners, Khurana described the event as a valuable and memorable experience. He now plans to participate in the marathon every year.

His achievement has brought pride to Ludhiana and serves as an inspiration for aspiring runners, proving that dedication and perseverance can help individuals overcome even the harshest challenges.
