Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria inaugurated a two-day anti-drug march today, marking the commencement of the ‘Nasha Mukt-Rangla Punjab’ initiative. The event kicked off from the historic village of Beas near Jalandhar, drawing a large crowd dedicated to combating the state’s growing drug problem.

Addressing the assembled participants, Governor Kataria called on women to take a leading role in the fight against drug addiction. “Women are the backbone of our society. Their involvement is crucial in eradicating this social evil,” he stated, urging female citizens to actively oppose drug use and educate their children about its dangers.

The march began at the home of legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh, with Governor Kataria himself leading the way on an eight-kilometer trek through the village. Emphasizing the need for a united front, he acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle drug abuse but stressed that true success requires the collective action of all Punjabis. “While government initiatives are vital, the support and participation of every individual are essential for complete eradication,” he added.

Governor Kataria highlighted the multifaceted impact of drug addiction, noting that it not only deteriorates personal health but also inflicts emotional and financial strain on families. He pointed out that women often bear the heaviest burdens in these scenarios, reinforcing the necessity of their active participation in anti-drug campaigns.

The Governor also addressed the correlation between drug abuse and rising crime rates, explaining that addiction can drive individuals to engage in illegal activities to sustain their habits. “Drug addiction doesn’t exist in isolation; it leads to a host of other societal issues, with crime being the most prominent,” he warned.

The march, organized in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society and esteemed writer and social activist Khushwant Singh, concluded today in the village of Bhatthe. Attendees included Lalit Jain, IAS, Director of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Census and Citizenship) in Chandigarh, and Shivdular Singh, former IAS officer and current Secretary of Red Cross Punjab. Both officials lauded Governor Kataria’s leadership and emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing the drug crisis.

In a special ceremony following today’s march, Governor Kataria honored Fauja Singh for his inspirational role in motivating the younger generation to lead healthier, drug-free lives. Singh’s legacy as a world-renowned runner serves as a beacon of perseverance and positive influence for the youth of Punjab.

The ‘Nasha Mukt-Rangla Punjab’ campaign symbolizes a significant step toward creating a drug-free and vibrant Punjab, with leaders and citizens alike committing to a future free from the scourge of addiction.
