In a display of robust democratic participation, the Gidderbaha Assembly constituency recorded the highest voter turnout of 81% during the Punjab Vidhan Sabha bypolls held on Wednesday. This turnout crowned Gidderbaha as the most participative among the four constituencies that went to the polls.
According to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C, the overall voter turnout across all four constituencies stood at 63% as of 6 PM. Final figures will be confirmed after polling teams return to collection centres and complete data entry, expected by Thursday morning.
Among the other constituencies, Dera Baba Nanak mirrored the state average with a turnout of 63%, while Barnala and Chabbewal recorded comparatively lower participation, at 54% and 53%, respectively.
CEO Sibin C expressed his gratitude to voters for their active engagement in the electoral process. “The remarkable participation reflects the commitment of citizens towards strengthening democracy,” he said. He also acknowledged the relentless efforts of Deputy Commissioners-cum-District Election Officers, Returning Officers, and polling staff in ensuring a smooth and fair voting process.
Security arrangements played a critical role in the elections, with Punjab Police, Central Armed Police Forces, and volunteers working in tandem to maintain order at polling stations. The CEO lauded their contributions, emphasizing the importance of a secure and peaceful voting environment.
He further extended his appreciation to political parties and candidates for their cooperation, as well as to the media for its constructive role in disseminating information and encouraging voter participation.
As Punjab awaits the final tallies, Gidderbaha’s exceptional turnout stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of democracy in the state.
