From Allies to Adversaries: NDP Drops Support for Trudeau’s Government Ahead of 2025 Polls

by Antariksh Singh

In a dramatic turn of events, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government faces a significant setback as Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party (NDP) has announced its decision to withdraw support from the minority Liberal administration. The announcement, delivered through a video message by Singh, comes as the political landscape gears up for the next general election, anticipated for late next year.

Singh’s video, released on social media, casts a critical light on Trudeau’s performance, highlighting dissatisfaction with the Liberal government’s handling of key issues. Singh condemned Trudeau for allegedly prioritizing corporate interests over the needs of ordinary Canadians. “Justin Trudeau has proven again and again he will always cave to corporate greed. The Liberals have let people down. They don’t deserve another chance from Canadians,” Singh declared.

The NDP leader emphasized the urgency of defeating the Conservative opposition, which recent polls suggest is well-positioned for a strong performance in the upcoming election. Singh characterized the upcoming battle as a pivotal moment for Canadian politics, warning of the potential impacts of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s proposed cuts. “There is another, even bigger battle ahead. The threat of Pierre Poilievre and Conservative cuts. From workers, from retirees, from young people, from patients, from families — he will cut in order to give more to big corporations and wealthy CEOs,” Singh warned.

The decision to end the support agreement, which was initially intended to last until October 2025, has been in the works for the past two weeks, according to an NDP spokesperson. The announcement came as a surprise to Trudeau’s party, with Singh making the news public almost immediately after informing the Prime Minister’s office.

In response to Singh’s announcement, Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized that his government remains committed to addressing pressing issues such as the affordability crisis, while expressing a hope that the election could be postponed until the fall of next year. “These are the things that we’re focused on. I’ll let others focus on politics. I really hope the NDP stays focused on how we can deliver for Canadians, as we have over the past years, rather than focusing on politics,” Trudeau stated.

The Liberal-NDP confidence-and-supply agreement, which had kept Trudeau’s government in power, included promises to implement significant measures such as dental care benefits, rental supplements for low-income tenants, and a temporary increase in the GST rebate. However, some of these commitments remain unfulfilled, fueling discontent within the NDP.

As the political climate shifts, the path forward remains uncertain, with the upcoming election set to be a critical juncture for both the Liberal and Conservative parties, as well as for the future direction of Canadian politics.
