India is in deep mourning following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a revered economist and statesman whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation’s trajectory. Political leaders from various quarters have expressed their grief and paid tribute to Dr. Singh’s legacy.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann conveyed his sorrow, stating, “His passing is a great loss to the nation. His absence will always be felt by the people of India.” Reflecting on Dr. Singh’s tenure, Mann highlighted his pivotal role in the 1990s in revitalizing India’s struggling economy and establishing the country’s economic identity on the global stage. “We pray to the Almighty to grant peace to the departed soul and provide strength to his family and admirers to bear this loss,” Mann added.

Finance Minister Harpal Cheema echoed similar sentiments, describing Dr. Singh as “a great economist and a son of Punjab.” Cheema emphasized Dr. Singh’s human qualities, noting, “He was also a very good human being. Today, the nation has lost a great economist and a noble individual. He served the country in various significant roles. His passing is a very tragic loss for all of us.”

In New Delhi, Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains and Chief Secretary KAP Sinha paid floral tributes to Dr. Singh on Friday, in the absence of Chief Minister Mann, who was visiting Australia. Bains lauded Dr. Singh’s exceptional contributions to India’s economic development, remarking on his ability to navigate the country through challenging economic times and set it on a path of sustained progress. He further praised Dr. Singh’s humility, honesty, simplicity, and ability, qualities that will continue to inspire future generations.

Amritsar also joined in the mourning as SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed his grief over Dr. Singh’s demise. Dhami highlighted Dr. Singh’s efforts in elevating the identity of Punjabis globally, particularly the Sikh turban, and his significant achievements as the leader of the world’s largest democracy. “The departure of such a person was a loss for the family and the whole globe. His humility, determination, restraint, and simplicity in politics would remain a hallmark of his identity,” Dhami stated.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a compassionate leader and visionary economist will be remembered fondly across the nation. As India bids farewell to one of its most esteemed leaders, the collective sentiments underscore the profound impact he had on shaping the country’s economic and political landscape.
