Relations between India and Canada had not been smooth in recent times, primarily due to the previous Canadian government’s open leniency toward Khalistani elements. Not only were these extremists given free rein, but the Canadian administration had also, on multiple occasions, spoken to India in a bitter tone under their pressure. Matters worsened when India was even accused of being involved in the death of a Khalistani individual—further straining bilateral ties.

However, the current Canadian Prime Minister’s invitation to the Indian PM to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada appears to be a step toward mending those strained ties. This gesture could very well turn bitterness into cooperation, leading to improved relations between the two nations. India is expected to raise the issue of cracking down on Khalistani extremists with the Canadian government during this summit.

Notably, figures like Gurpatwant Singh Pannun—who operate from Canadian soil—have no significant influence in India and lack the courage to even set foot there. Still, they continue to spew venom against India from afar. Recently, some videos have gone viral on social media showing Khalistani supporters chanting offensive slogans against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including dangerous calls such as “Kill Modi.” Such behavior is utterly shameful and unacceptable to any Indian citizen.

Given this situation, the Canadian government must act firmly against Khalistani elements to ensure that they cannot disrupt the G7 Summit or misuse Canadian freedoms to spread hate. It’s important to note that the Sikh community in India has never supported the Khalistan movement or raised such demands. Yet, because these extremists present themselves in Sikh attire, their misguided actions unjustly tarnish the image of the entire Sikh community.
