India and Canada Reconnect as PM Modi Accepts G7 Summit Invite

In a diplomatic gesture reinforcing India-Canada ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed his participation in the upcoming G7 Summit following a warm conversation with Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mark Carney. The two leaders discussed shared priorities and pledged to strengthen collaboration between the two democracies.

The conversation came shortly after Carney’s electoral victory, which ushered him into office as Canada’s Prime Minister following a successful campaign led by the Liberal Party. Carney, a former central banker known for his climate finance advocacy, now steps onto the global stage amid high expectations.

Taking to social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi shared: “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.”

He added that India and Canada, as “vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties,” would collaborate “with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”

This year’s G7 Summit, set to take place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta, marks the 51st meeting of the world’s most advanced economies. It also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the G7 itself. Kananaskis, a picturesque mountain town, last hosted the summit in 2002.

Under Prime Minister Carney’s stewardship, the summit will tackle critical global challenges such as economic resilience, climate action, digital transformation, and international peace and security. Alongside the G7 member nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—the European Union also participates in the talks.

India has been invited as a guest nation, alongside Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Ukraine, reflecting the summit’s broader outreach and inclusive dialogue on global issues.

PM Modi expressed anticipation for meaningful discussions at the summit and a productive meeting with Carney, signalling a new chapter in India-Canada relations at a time of global flux and cooperation.
