In a major crackdown on organised crime, Punjab Police have arrested seven individuals allegedly linked to a network involved in narcotics trafficking and the illegal movement of weapons and explosives. The operation led to the seizure of 3.491 kg of heroin, two pistols and a hand grenade.

The arrests and recoveries were made by Amritsar Rural Police as part of an operation targeting criminal networks engaged in drug distribution and arms smuggling across the region.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed the development on Wednesday through a post on social media platform X, revealing that initial investigations had uncovered suspected connections between the arrested individuals and smugglers operating from abroad.

According to the police, the accused were allegedly maintaining contact with foreign-based handlers who facilitated the supply of illegal firearms. Investigators suspect that these weapons were intended for distribution among criminal elements operating in the state.

The recovery of a hand grenade alongside firearms and a substantial quantity of heroin has brought the alleged network’s involvement in multiple forms of illegal activity under scrutiny.

Police have registered First Information Reports (FIRs) at Chatiwind and Lopoke police stations in connection with the case. Investigators are now working to identify other individuals associated with the operation, trace the origins of the seized contraband and determine its intended recipients.

The investigation is also focused on establishing the network’s backward and forward linkages, including the sources of illegal supplies and the channels through which weapons and narcotics were allegedly being distributed.

DGP Yadav reiterated the Punjab Police’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, illicit arms circulation, explosives smuggling and organised criminal activities.

Further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the suspected smuggling operation and identify additional individuals who may have played a role in facilitating its activities.
