73 and Unstoppable: Hardev Kaur Clinches Top Dairy Farmer Honour

by Manjari Singh

In a stirring celebration of grit and tradition, Hardev Kaur Kang, 73, a determined dairy farmer from Phidde village, has been conferred the prestigious ‘Best Woman Dairy Farmer Award – North Zone’ by the Indian Dairy Association. The accolade was presented at the 51st Dairy Industry Annual National-Level Conference in Patna, Bihar, from March 6 to 8.

Once on the verge of abandoning her native vocation after the loss of her husband, Gurbinder Singh Kang, Hardev Kaur turned adversity into opportunity. Three years after his passing, and despite her sons’ urging to relocate to the United States, she resolved to honor her late husband’s dream by reinvigorating the family dairy business. Under her vigilant leadership, the daily milk production surged from 2,000 to an impressive 2,400 litres, a milestone that underscores her innovative practices and unwavering commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Hardev Kaur’s journey began in 1990 when she accompanied her husband to the United States. However, the couple’s deep-rooted affection for Punjab brought them back in 2009. “It was only due to my husband’s love for Punjab that we returned,” she recalled. The couple then embarked on a new chapter in 2010, launching their dairy venture with just 50 cows. Today, that modest beginning has blossomed into an enterprise housing over 250 cows.

Her dedication has not only transformed her own livelihood but has also sparked a broader movement. Encouraging more than 100 local families to embrace dairy farming, Hardev Kaur’s efforts have become a beacon for rural economic revival. “It is disheartening to see the youth of Punjab leaving the country in search of greener pastures,” she lamented. “Why don’t we stay here and contribute to Punjab’s growth? There are many opportunities for the younger generation—what’s needed is skill development and a willingness to learn.”

Her inspiring story resonated with industry leaders. Gurbhej Singh Tibbi, Director of Verka Milk Plant in Ferozepur, praised her resilience and determination, stating that her journey stands as “a testament to women’s strength and determination, proving that with perseverance no challenge is impossible.”

The honor bestowed upon Hardev Kaur is more than a personal achievement; it is a clarion call to her community. In an era where traditional industries face stiff competition and urban migration, her success underscores the latent potential of rural enterprise. As Punjab’s dairy industry continues to evolve, the remarkable example set by Hardev Kaur Kang is poised to inspire a new generation of agriculturists to embrace innovation and remain rooted in their homeland.

In celebrating her triumph, the dairy community and local leaders alike have recognized that the future of Punjab lies in its ability to balance heritage with progressive practices—a balance embodied perfectly by Hardev Kaur Kang.
