Dussehra in Malerkotla: A Victory Against Drug Abuse

by Manjari Singh

This year’s Dasehra celebrations in the Malwa region took on a transformative tone, blending traditional festivities with a powerful message against drug abuse. Enthusiasts from various social, educational, and government organizations came together to burn effigies of drugs alongside the customary figures of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhkaran, symbolizing a united stand to steer the youth away from substance abuse.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Rotary District 3090, which covers parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Amjad Ali, Chief Adviser of Rotary District 3090, emphasized the comprehensive efforts undertaken to combat the drug menace. “We organized workshops, seminars, and exhibitions as part of a special campaign to educate and prevent drug abuse among our youth,” Ali remarked.

The campaign quickly gained momentum, attracting support from numerous other social and educational organizations. Senior police officials, led by SSP Gagan Ajit Singh, played a crucial role by installing effigies of various drugs at multiple venues across the region. These effigies were ceremoniously set ablaze during the Dasehra festivities, reinforcing the community’s commitment to eliminating drug addiction.

Rotary District Governor Sandeep Chauhan praised the widespread participation, noting that over 100 Rotary Club units contributed to raising awareness about the causes and consequences of drug abuse. “Our collective efforts have made a significant impact in spreading the message of prevention and recovery,” Chauhan stated. Additionally, the celebrations featured declamation contests, seminars, and exhibitions displaying informative charts and banners, further educating the public on the dangers of drugs.

While the anti-drug campaign took center stage, the spirit of Dasehra was alive and well in Malerkotla, Amargarh, and Ahmedgarh. Residents enjoyed traditional festivities, including vibrant processions and cultural performances, embodying the triumph of good over evil both metaphorically and literally through the symbolic burning of drug effigies.

This innovative approach to Dasehra not only honored cultural traditions but also addressed a critical social issue, highlighting Malwa’s proactive stance in safeguarding its youth. As the flames rose on this auspicious day, they carried with them a promise of a drug-free future, blending celebration with a cause that resonates deeply within the community.
