Political Football? UK TV Hosts Claim Trudeau is Exploiting Sikh Community Crisis

by Parminder Singh Sodhi

In a recent broadcast of the UK-based MATV program “Gurdwara MiriPiri,” the hosts engaged in a critical discussion regarding the escalating tensions between Canada and India, with particular emphasis on the case surrounding the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The presenters characterized the accusations against Indian diplomats in Canada as a “political drama,” questioning the motives behind Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s public statements.

The anchors argued that, despite over a year passing since Nijjar’s killing, no substantial evidence has been presented in court. They stressed that Trudeau’s claims, which were made in Parliament, should be scrutinized in a legal setting rather than being politicized. By making such statements in Parliament, they suggested, Trudeau might be attempting to shift attention away from his political challenges.

The MATV presenters compared Canada’s treatment of Sikhs to what they described as Pakistan’s historic targeting of the community, implying that Trudeau may be using the Sikh population as a political tool to preserve his government. Notably, they referenced the role of Jagmeet Singh Brar, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), whose threats to withdraw support from Trudeau’s coalition government added pressure on the Prime Minister to take a strong stance. The anchors pointed out that it was unusual for Trudeau to make a political announcement based on intelligence reports without allowing the case to be properly addressed in court.

The broadcast also touched on the diplomatic fallout between the two nations, highlighting how downsizing consular services could affect both Indian and Canadian citizens. The ongoing standoff has already seen visa and passport services disrupted, leaving many in limbo.

Adding to their argument, the hosts cited other unresolved cases, such as the murder of Ripudaman Singh Malik in Canada and the ongoing controversy surrounding Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States. They questioned the handling of these cases and suggested that the real motive behind the Nijjar case might be to tarnish the image of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The presenters referred to an incident in Haryana, India, where a Congress leader allegedly revealed plans to bring Modi “down to the ground.”

Finally, the discussion took aim at what the anchors described as the “fake” Sikh Federation and Sikh Parliament, accusing these organizations of misleading the Sikh community. According to the presenters, these groups are using political events to manipulate public sentiment, further complicating an already tense situation.

The discussion on “Gurdwara MiriPiri” reflects growing concern over the political and diplomatic implications of the Nijjar case, with both sides locked in a battle that has repercussions for the Sikh community, bilateral relations, and regional stability.
