by Manjari Singh

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of three students from Punjab, India. The incident occurred when the taxi they were traveling in overturned after a tyre burst. The victims were identified as Harman Somal (23) and Navjot Somal (19), siblings from Malaud village in Ludhiana, and Rashmdeep Kaur (23), a resident of Samana in Sangrur district.

According to reports, the students had been returning from submitting their Permanent Residency files when the accident took place. The vehicle, which was carrying the students, lost control after a tyre malfunction, leading to a fatal crash. Remarkably, the taxi driver survived the incident.

Chamkaur Singh, Rashmdeep Kaur’s uncle, confirmed that Rashmdeep had been studying in Canada for the past four years. The family is devastated by the loss, and the local community is mourning the tragedy.

This incident highlights a concerning trend: recent data shows that Canada has reported the highest number of deaths of Indian students abroad in the past five years, totaling 172 cases out of 633 reported incidents. These statistics underscore the need for greater attention to student safety and support services for those studying abroad.
