Hockey Punjab has announced that selection trials for its men’s and women’s teams, slated to compete in Hockey India’s inaugural Masters Cup 2025, will take place at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium on Tuesday, June 3. The Masters Cup, to be hosted by Hockey India from June 18 to June 27 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marks the first edition of the tournament under Hockey India’s banner.

According to Hockey Punjab president Nitin Kohli and general secretary Amrik Singh Powar, eligibility for the men’s trials is limited to players born on or before January 1, 1985 (i.e., age 40 and above), while women players must have been born on or before January 1, 1991 (age 35 and above). Both office-bearers emphasized that participants must present an updated Aadhaar card at registration; those without a valid Aadhaar card will be turned away and will not be permitted to participate.

In addition to identity verification, Kohli and Powar underscored that every contender must arrive with a complete sports kit, including hockey sticks, shin guards, appropriate footwear, and protective equipment. “Players missing any essential gear will be asked to leave the trials,” said Powar. “It is our responsibility to ensure uniformity and safety during the selection process.”

Only athletes who hold an active registration with Hockey India will be eligible for selection. Once chosen, players will report to a preparatory coaching camp, details of which will be finalized following the trials. Kohli noted that this camp aims to fine-tune team strategies and build cohesion prior to departure for Chennai.

The Masters Cup is designed to provide a competitive platform for veteran players, celebrating the enduring spirit of those who have contributed to Indian hockey over the years. The men’s category will feature teams comprised of athletes aged 40 and above, while the women’s Masters division will showcase players aged 35 and above. Hockey India’s decision to launch this tournament in Chennai reflects a broader initiative to promote hockey among seasoned athletes nationwide.

Crucially, these selection trials are the gateway for Punjab’s veteran players to vie for a spot in this landmark event. The Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, long regarded as a breeding ground for national-level talent, will host the trials beginning at 9 a.m. on June 3. Officials urge all interested participants to arrive early, with paperwork and equipment in hand, to facilitate a smooth registration process.

With the Masters Cup’s opening ceremonies scheduled for June 18, the selected Punjab teams will travel to Chennai later this month. Hockey Punjab’s leadership hopes that both squads will showcase strong performances, drawing on the state’s rich hockey legacy. Meanwhile, aspiring Masters players are reminded that June 3 is the final opportunity to demonstrate their skills and secure a berth on Punjab’s first-ever Hockey India Masters Cup rosters.
