Punjab and Haryana High Court Launches Ambitious Tree Plantation Drive

by Manjari Singh

In a significant stride towards environmental stewardship, Chief Justice Sheel Nagu spearheaded a momentous tree plantation initiative at the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday. The campaign, kickstarted under the aegis of the court’s building committee led by Justice Deepak Sibal, marked a pivotal moment with the ceremonial planting of the inaugural sapling by Chief Justice Nagu himself.

The event saw Chief Justice Nagu, alongside other esteemed judges, plant over 600 saplings, including 80 flowering and medicinal plants, and fruit-bearing trees within the court premises. Emphasizing the court’s commitment to environmental conservation, Chief Justice Nagu highlighted the imperative of nurturing a greener and healthier environment for future generations.

This initiative builds upon the commendable efforts of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Employees Welfare Association, which earlier organized a successful fruit-bearing tree plantation drive on April 30. Registrar Vigilance-cum-PRO Kamaljit Lamba affirmed that these endeavors align closely with principles of sustainable development and the public trust doctrine, reinforcing the court’s proactive role in environmental jurisprudence.

Speaking on behalf of the legal fraternity, a senior advocate praised the high court’s proactive stance, hailing the incorporation of additional greenery within the court’s infrastructure as a pioneering move in environmental jurisprudence.

The court’s commitment extends beyond mere ceremonial gestures. It includes meticulous follow-ups to ensure the healthy growth of all newly planted trees, thereby upholding principles of intergenerational equity and setting a precedent for community-driven environmental conservation efforts.

This ambitious tree plantation drive not only underscores the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s dedication to fostering a sustainable future but also serves as a clarion call for broader societal engagement in environmental preservation. As the saplings take root, they symbolize a collective commitment to safeguarding our planet and nurturing a greener, more resilient tomorrow.
