Modi-Putin Talks Yield Breakthrough: Russia to Release Indians from Ukraine War

by Antariksh Singh

In a significant development during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow, Russia has agreed to facilitate the return of all Indian nationals who were coerced into fighting for its army in Ukraine. The breakthrough came after Prime Minister Modi raised the issue directly with President Vladimir Putin during his ongoing two-day visit to Russia.

Reports indicate that nearly two dozen Indians were lured under false pretenses to Ukraine, promised lucrative jobs but instead forced into combat roles. This distressing situation prompted strong action from the Indian government, which aggressively pursued the matter with Russian authorities.

“Strong action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who recruited them on false pretexts and promises,” stated Indian officials in response to the plight of these individuals.

The issue gained prominence earlier this year when tragic reports emerged of Indian casualties in the conflict, underscoring the urgent need for intervention. The Foreign Ministry of India has persistently pressed for the safe return of these individuals, highlighting it as a paramount concern for the nation’s diplomatic efforts.

The agreement marks a significant relief for the families of those still stranded in Russia, echoing India’s staunch stance against the exploitation of its nationals in conflict zones. The Indian government has not only demanded the immediate repatriation of its citizens but also insisted on preventing such incidents from occurring in the future.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Moscow, amidst the backdrop of strained global relations over the Ukraine conflict, underscores India’s delicate balancing act between historical ties with Russia and emerging partnerships elsewhere. His engagements include bilateral discussions with President Putin and participation in the 22nd India-Russia summit, aimed at reinforcing multifaceted cooperation between the two nations.

As the diplomatic efforts yield tangible results, the focus now shifts to ensuring the safe return of all affected Indians and preventing similar occurrences in the future, as India continues to navigate its foreign policy amidst evolving global dynamics.
