When the recent floods swept through Punjab, leaving countless families stranded and homeless, one Kapurthala industrialist decided to swap his usual line of work for a mission of mercy.

Pritpal Singh Hanspal, owner of Hanspal Traders, is known for manufacturing rail parts. But for one week, his factory became a lifeline for flood-hit communities. Setting aside regular operations, he and his 70-member team worked 16-hour days to build 100 boats — each inscribed with the words “Halimiya, hamdardia te muhabbata di kishti” (boat created with compassion and love).

“I saw people devastated by the floods, crying out for help, even asking for boats. It broke my heart,” Hanspal said. “Punjab has given us so much. Now, it is our turn to rise up for Punjab.”

A Week of Relentless Work

Foremen Jassa Singh and Malkit Singh recalled that the moment Hanspal explained the mission — to save lives — every worker felt proud to be involved. The boats were completed and delivered in just seven days, a testament to the team’s dedication.

Hanspal declined to dwell on the financial impact of pausing his business. “We work all year round. If we can give a few days to those in need, and if it helps save lives, then that’s what truly matters,” he said.

Looking Ahead: Homes for the Displaced

With the immediate rescue needs addressed, Hanspal is now turning his attention to longer-term relief. His next goal is to construct prefabricated homes for those whose houses were destroyed in the floods. He plans to consult architects, designers, and technical experts to bring this idea to life.

The boats may have carried victims to safety, but Hanspal hopes his next project will help them rebuild their lives. “The floodwaters will recede,” he said, “but the need for shelter will remain. We can and must step up again.”
