In a significant move aimed at fostering innovation and practical business skills among young learners, the Department of Higher Education has mandated an entrepreneurship mindset course for all undergraduate students.

The initiative has already been introduced across 18 government and private universities. As part of the programme, every undergraduate will conceptualize a business or service idea, developing and refining it over successive semesters. Student performance will be evaluated based on the idea’s viability, degree of innovation, and revenue generation.

A senior government official explained that under this framework, students could be set a target of earning ₹10,000 per semester. “This will boost their marketing and entrepreneurship skills,” the official said, adding that the hands-on approach aims to prepare students for real-world challenges.

In an advisory issued by Higher Education and Languages Secretary Anindita Mitra, vice-chancellors of state universities were instructed to ensure the programme’s implementation. The course will be rolled out in phases, beginning with BTech, BCom, BBA, and BVoc courses in the 2025–26 academic year. By the following year, it will extend to all undergraduate disciplines.

Education officials believe the mandatory course could reshape graduate readiness for the job market, equipping students not just with academic knowledge, but also with the entrepreneurial mindset needed to succeed in a competitive economy.
