Echoes of Gang Warfare in Canada? RCMP Makes Arrest in Connection with Nijjar’s Killing

by Antariksh Singh

RCMP in a statement mentioned an arrest resulting from the investigation into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a known Khalistan extremist. According to media reports, three men, identified as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar—all of Indian origin—have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Nijjar’s death.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent figure within the Khalistan movement, was fatally shot in an incident that has stirred considerable controversy and speculation about the motives behind his murder. Nijjar had been a contentious figure, known for his active involvement in the separatist Khalistan movement.

The arrests in Nijjar’s case have not halted the swirl of theories about who might be behind his killing. Pro-Khalistan elements and some media outlets were prompt to allege an Indian role in the incident. However, these claims remain unsubstantiated as details about the investigation are under wraps, and no evidence has been made public to support such allegations.

The possibility of a gang war, however, should not be ruled out, reminiscent of another high-profile case involving a Khalistan separatist. On July 14, 2022, Ripudaman Singh Malik, a former Khalistan separatist who had also been controversial within the movement, was gunned down near his office in Surrey, Canada. Malik, before his untimely demise, had accused Nijjar and another individual, Boyle, of actions contrary to the interests of the Sikh community and its traditions (Sikh maryada). Although he denied the allegations, Nijjar was also accused of killing Malik. Malik’s death was speculated to be the result of internal conflicts within the Khalistan movement, a gang-related incident, or Gurdwara politics, hinting at a pattern that might also explain Nijjar’s assassination.

Both incidents underscore the volatile and often violent dynamics within Khalistan separatist factions in Canada, a country that has become a significant base for such activities outside India. These killings have raised concerns about the potential for further violence and the impact of such conflicts on the broader Sikh community in Canada.

As the investigation into Nijjar’s murder continues, authorities need to be cautious about drawing premature conclusions. The involvement of the Canadian police and judicial system should ensure that the case is handled with the thoroughness it demands, aiming to bring justice to those responsible for Nijjar’s death while also maintaining public order and safety within the affected communities.
