Despite the deployment of sophisticated anti-drone systems along the Indo-Pakistan border, cross-border drone incursions remain a pressing concern. In the latest spate of incidents, the Border Security Force (BSF) neutralized four drones over the past 24 hours, intercepting a cache of weapons and narcotics in Punjab’s Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts.

According to a BSF spokesperson, the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), believed to be China-manufactured DJI models, were intercepted during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday in the Pul Moran border village. The drones were reportedly carrying one pistol and two packets of heroin, weighing approximately 1.15 kilograms.

“Upon detecting suspicious aerial activity, anti-drone protocols were immediately activated,” the spokesperson said. “Three DJI Mavic 3 Classic drones were successfully brought down, and the illicit cargo was recovered.”

In a parallel operation in Tarn Taran, BSF troops, in coordination with the Punjab Police, launched a search operation in the Dal village area following inputs about drone activity. A DJI Air 3 drone was found crash-landed in a paddy field, though no contraband was discovered in the vicinity. Authorities suspect the payload had been retrieved prior to the security forces’ arrival.

These incidents follow a series of drone interdictions earlier this month. On the night of July 17–18, BSF forces foiled multiple drone sorties, downing six drones in the Pul Moran and Roranwala Khurd sectors and seizing 2.34 kg of heroin.

A similar operation on July 24 saw BSF troops shoot down six drones near Modhe and Attari villages. This led to the recovery of three pistols and over 1 kg of narcotics, again highlighting the scale and coordination of trans-border smuggling attempts.

Security officials say these recurring drone incursions suggest a sustained effort by cross-border networks to smuggle arms and narcotics into Indian territory. While advanced surveillance and counter-drone systems have significantly boosted border security, officials acknowledge that challenges persist.

“These drones are fast, low-flying, and often deployed at night, making detection and interception a constant battle,” said a senior BSF officer, stressing the need for continued vigilance and inter-agency cooperation.

With the frequency of such incidents showing no signs of decline, the BSF and Punjab Police continue to maintain high alert along the border, committed to thwarting what they describe as a persistent and evolving threat.
