Security forces recovered a suspected Pakistan-origin drone and a packet of heroin from farmland near the International Border in the Fazilka sector on Saturday, officials said.
Acting on specific intelligence, teams from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police conducted a coordinated search in the GG base area. During the sweep, personnel found an unmanned aerial vehicle—believed to be manufactured in China—and approximately 550 grams of heroin lying in a field.
Following the recovery, the Fazilka (Sadar) police registered a case against unidentified individuals based on the statement of BSF Inspector Manoj Kumar.
Station House Officer Hardev Singh Bedi said preliminary indications suggest the drone was being used to ferry narcotics from across the border. “It appears the drone experienced a technical fault and crashed while attempting to deliver its payload,” he said, adding that investigators are confident of making a breakthrough soon.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the use of drones by cross-border smugglers to transport drugs into Punjab, prompting enhanced surveillance in the border districts.
