Canadian law enforcement authorities have refuted claims of foreign interference in the recent shooting incident targeting the residence of an associate of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent figure associated with the pro-Khalistan movement. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Surrey, British Columbia, have charged two teenagers in connection with the incident, dismissing allegations linking the attack to external forces.
The shooting, which occurred in the early hours of February 1, targeted the home of Simranjeet Singh, who is known for his involvement in organizing protests and activism aligned with the pro-Khalistan cause. Initially, there were speculations implicating foreign interference, with pro-Khalistan groups, including Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), alleging Indian involvement in the attack. These allegations were fueled by Singh’s recent participation in a protest outside the Indian consulate in Vancouver on January 26.
However, according to the Surrey RCMP, investigations have not uncovered any evidence linking the incident to foreign interference. The detachment emphasized this point in a press release, stating, “Investigators have not established any links to foreign interference in relation to this matter.”
The shooting incident has further strained tensions within the pro-Khalistan community in Canada, with some members expressing concerns over potential intimidation tactics employed by external actors. Moninder Singh, spokesperson for the British Columbia Gurdwaras Council and a prominent separatist figure, conveyed suspicions that the attack was orchestrated to deter individuals like Simranjeet Singh from engaging in activism.
In a significant development, two 16-year-olds have been apprehended and charged in connection with the shooting. Although their identities have been withheld due to their status as minors, Surrey RCMP spokesperson Cpl Sarbjit K Sangha confirmed their arrest on February 12. The British Columbia Prosecution Service has approved charges against the teenagers for discharging a firearm into a place and possessing a loaded prohibited firearm. Currently, the youths are in custody awaiting their next court appearance.
The incident underscores the complex dynamics surrounding the pro-Khalistan movement in Canada and the challenges associated with addressing internal conflicts within the community. While suspicions of external interference persist, Canadian authorities remain focused on pursuing legal action against those responsible for the shooting, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of all residents, regardless of their affiliations.
