What began as a night of Diwali celebrations ended in tragedy for a 26-year-old man in Wolverhampton, after a confrontation between two groups escalated into a deadly attack. A 21-year-old man has now been convicted of murder for intentionally driving over the victim twice.
Jashan Singh was found guilty on October 26, 2026, of murdering Navpreet Singh, who sustained fatal injuries after being struck by a Mercedes car in the Blakenhall area of Wolverhampton last year.
The incident occurred during the early hours of October 22, 2025, when Navpreet was returning from Diwali festivities with friends at Phoenix Park, near Dudley Road.
According to details presented during the case, tensions arose between two groups, leading to a violent altercation. Navpreet and one of his friends were assaulted during the confrontation. As Navpreet attempted to intervene and assist his friend, he became a target of the attackers.
Among those involved was 18-year-old Prabhjot Singh, who struck Navpreet with an iron rod during the violence.
Despite the assault, Navpreet managed to get back on his feet. Moments later, he approached a white Mercedes belonging to Jashan and kicked one of its front headlights.
What followed proved fatal. Jashan drove his vehicle directly into Navpreet, running him over before reversing the car over him a second time. He then fled the scene, leaving the critically injured man behind.
Navpreet’s friends rushed him to hospital in an attempt to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators subsequently uncovered a series of actions allegedly intended to conceal the involvement of those responsible.
After leaving the scene, Jashan travelled to an industrial estate in Willenhall, where he met 18-year-old Mohit Singh. The two changed and exchanged clothing in an apparent effort to make identification more difficult.
Jashan also switched vehicles and mobile phones as he attempted to evade police. Detectives tracking his movements established that he had travelled near airports in Coventry, Heathrow and Stansted following the killing.
His attempts to avoid arrest came to an end on October 24, 2025, when police located and detained him in Bicester.
Mohit, meanwhile, had travelled abroad after the incident. He was arrested at Birmingham Airport upon returning to the United Kingdom in January 2026.
Following legal proceedings, Jashan was convicted of both murder and perverting the course of justice. Mohit was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice for his role in the aftermath of the killing.
Prabhjot had earlier admitted his involvement in the violence by pleading guilty to violent disorder.
All three men are scheduled to appear before Wolverhampton Crown Court for sentencing on November 30, 2026.
The killing has left Navpreet’s family facing an immense personal loss. He was married, and his wife was pregnant at the time of his death.
Detective Sergeant Rob Moir, of West Midlands Police’s homicide unit, described Navpreet as a man who had gone out to enjoy Diwali with friends and had not been seeking confrontation.
He said Navpreet and his companions had been subjected to an unprovoked attack involving the three defendants, with the situation ultimately escalating into a fatal act of violence.
Moir expressed hope that the convictions would offer some measure of closure to the bereaved family, while emphasising that the thoughts of the investigating team remained with Navpreet’s loved ones.
The verdict brings the criminal proceedings a step closer to their conclusion, more than a year after a festive gathering ended in the loss of a young life.
