Chirag Negi of PAU Club emerged victorious in the boys’ Group II 400m freestyle event on the opening day of the Ludhiana District Sub-Junior and Junior Swimming Championship at the Punjab Agricultural University swimming pool on Saturday.

Negi completed the race in 5 minutes and 40.8 seconds to secure the gold medal. Manntehveer Singh Deo of Ludhiana Club finished second with a timing of 5:48.74, while PAU Club’s Bhavya Gupta claimed the bronze after clocking 6:14.11.

Young swimmers representing several clubs, educational institutions and Khanna delivered promising performances as competition began in the two-day district championship.

In the boys’ Group IB 800m freestyle, Kunwar of Fin Flyers Club secured the top position with a timing of 12:00.7. Swim Force Club’s Aryan Mishra won the silver medal in 12:47.70, while his clubmate Kabir Singh finished third in 15:48.72.

Fin Flyers Club also tasted success in the girls’ Group II 400m freestyle event, with Aaradhya comfortably winning the gold medal after completing the distance in 6:35.94.

More than 160 swimmers are participating in the championship, competing for individual medals as well as overall team honours. The event is being conducted by the District Swimming Association, Ludhiana.

Association secretary Balraj Sharma said the introduction of a Group IV category for swimmers aged 10 years and below was one of the highlights of this year’s championship. He said the new category was aimed at identifying young talent and strengthening swimming at the grassroots level.

PAU Vice-Chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal formally inaugurated the championship. He presented medals to the winners and urged the participants to remain committed to training and sporting excellence.
