History stands witness to the fact that Sikhs are a martial community that has always been at the forefront of sacrifice—from the struggle for India’s independence to every time the nation has needed them since. Even though Sikhs make up only about 2% of India’s population, they have contributed to over 85% of the sacrifices. Such was their bravery that even the British rulers were forced to bow down before them.

The Battle of Saragarhi still echoes in our memories — when just a handful of Sikh soldiers fearlessly fought thousands of enemy troops. Even today, Sikh soldiers stand firm and proud on India’s borders, guarding the nation with unwavering courage.

Since independence, the youth of Punjab—especially Sikhs—have taken pride either in farming or in joining the armed forces. However, in recent times, government policies have led to a decline in Sikh recruitment in the army, as selections began being made based on the population ratio of each state, resulting in more soldiers being recruited from states other than Punjab.

Even today, there are countless Sikh families whose sons—and daughters—serve in the armed forces. A recent example is that of Lieutenant General D.P. Singh, who was promoted and had his medal ceremoniously pinned on him by his two daughters, both of whom serve as Majors in the Indian Army. What a proud moment that must have been for a father—seeing his daughters follow in his footsteps to serve the nation.

But it’s deeply unfortunate when individuals like Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, sitting abroad and representing hardly anyone, begin calling themselves Sikhs—despite not even adhering to the Sikh form—and start preaching about Khalistan. Encouraged by Pakistan, they engage in terrorist activities, and because of their actions, the entire Sikh community starts getting defamed.

We live in the age of social media, and many people unaware of Sikh history and their immense sacrifices begin attacking the entire Sikh community because of a few like Pannu and his Khalistani propaganda. That’s why, anyone who wishes to comment on Sikhs should first make an effort to understand their history, legacy, and unmatched patriotism.
