In a bold move mirroring recent actions in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, Punjab has escalated its war on drugs by targeting drug peddlers through the demolition of properties linked to illicit activities. In a high-profile operation in Patiala, authorities demolished the house of a notorious drug peddler, identified as Rinki, in the Rori Kut Mohalla area of Lakkad Mandi.
The demolition, carried out by a dedicated team of Patiala police led by SSP Nanak Singh, is part of an intensified campaign against drug trafficking. According to SSP Singh, the residence was built using funds generated from drug sales. “The structure stands as a testament to how drug money has been funneled into creating illegal assets,” he said. The police operation, which saw a significant force deployed, was aimed at forestalling any potential law and order issues in an area known to be frequented by other drug peddlers.
Rinki’s criminal record is extensive, with more than 10 FIRs registered against her under the NDPS Act from 2016 to 2023. Despite prolonged efforts by the authorities, she had managed to elude arrest until this decisive action in Patiala. The demolition sends a clear message about the state’s resolve to dismantle the networks that fuel drug abuse.
The aggressive enforcement campaign was not limited to Patiala alone. Earlier in the week, a similar operation unfolded in Ludhiana, where Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal led a team that demolished properties belonging to two drug smugglers, Sonu and Rahul Hans. In addition to the demolitions, the properties were attached by the police, preventing further misuse of these assets by criminal elements.
Punjab’s government has unequivocally declared drug abuse a top priority. In an effort to complement the stringent measures against drug trafficking, district administrations have been instructed to expand rehabilitation and de-addiction facilities. A five-member cabinet committee has been set up to closely monitor the collaborative efforts of police and health departments in curbing the scourge of drug addiction.
This comprehensive crackdown underscores the commitment of Punjab’s authorities to not only target the physical symbols of drug money but also address the broader public health crisis associated with drug abuse.
