In a move celebrated as a significant milestone for diversity and inclusion in Canadian public life, retired RCMP officer Baltej Singh Dhillon has been appointed to the Senate. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the decision on Friday, heralding Dhillon’s storied career as a beacon of progress in both law enforcement and politics.
Dhillon, who made history in 1991 as the first turbaned Sikh to serve as an officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, broke through longstanding barriers when he first set his sights on joining the force. After emigrating from Malaysia at the age of 16, Dhillon faced rigid dress-code restrictions that once disqualified him because of his turban and beard. Undeterred, he successfully appealed the policy—a process marked by considerable opposition—and paved the way for his entry into the RCMP. During his impressive 30-year career, Dhillon rose to the rank of Inspector and served in a variety of critical roles, including major crime investigator, police interrogator, polygraph examiner, intelligence officer, and emergency planner. Since retiring from active duty, Dhillon has continued to dedicate himself to public service. In 2019, he lent his expertise to British Columbia’s anti-gang agency while remaining active in his community as a youth leader.
