Archery proved to be a particularly fruitful domain for Punjab’s talent. Simranjit Kaur and Praneet Kaur emerged as the stars of the show, clinching an impressive tally of three gold and two silver medals collectively at the Asia Cup of Archery in Baghdad, Iraq. Simranjit Kaur, hailing from Abohar, exhibited her prowess by securing two gold medals in the mixed team and women’s recurve events, along with a silver in the individual category. Similarly, Praneet Kaur from Mansa showcased her skill by bagging gold in the individual category and silver in the team category of the compound event.
In the realm of hockey, India’s triumph over Ireland with a resounding 4-0 victory in the Pro Hockey League added another feather to Punjab’s cap. The Indian team, boasting ten players from Punjab, including Captain Harmanpreet Singh, secured the third position with 15 points in the league, setting the stage for further glory as they gear up for the European leg matches slated for May-June.
Meanwhile, in badminton, Ludhiana’s Dhruv Kapila, along with his partner Arjuna, showcased their finesse by clinching the men’s doubles title at the Uganda International Challenge.
Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Punjab’s Sports Minister, lauded the stellar achievements of the state’s athletes, attributing their success to their relentless dedication and the guidance provided by their coaches. He emphasized the pivotal role of Punjab’s new sports policy, spearheaded by Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Maan, in fostering a conducive environment for nurturing sporting talent.
