His passing marks the end of a distinguished career that spanned education, academia, and politics, leaving behind a lasting legacy of diversity and public service in Canada.

Born in Punjab, India, in 1934, Pannu immigrated to Canada in 1962, eventually settling in Whitecourt, Alberta. He began his career in education by teaching high school until 1964, a role that paved the way for his lifelong commitment to learning and community empowerment.

Pannu’s academic journey is notable not only for its longevity but also for its impact. After earning a PhD in Sociology from the University of Alberta in 1973, he briefly taught at York University before returning to his alma mater. In 1969, he became a full-time faculty member at the University of Alberta, where he inspired generations of students over a 27-year tenure until his retirement in 1996. His scholarly work and dedication to sociology contributed significantly to the academic community and enhanced understanding of multiculturalism and social dynamics in Canada.

In 1997, Pannu transitioned into politics, winning election as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Edmonton-Strathcona. His political career reached new heights when he assumed the leadership of the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) in 2000. Serving as party leader until 2004, he broke new ground as one of the first Canadians of South Asian descent to helm a major political party, setting a powerful precedent for diversity and inclusion in Canadian politics.

Pannu’s influence extended beyond his professional achievements. As an educator and politician, he championed multiculturalism, social justice, and equitable opportunities for all Canadians. His pioneering leadership not only reshaped political discourse in Alberta but also inspired a diverse new generation of leaders committed to public service and community development.
