Punjab’s War on Drugs: 2613 Arrests in Just 22 Days

by Parminder Singh Sodhi

In a decisive move to combat the state’s burgeoning drug menace, Punjab Police have taken a significant stride in their anti-drug campaign, arresting 75 alleged smugglers in a coordinated operation that has now reached its 22nd consecutive day. Under the direct guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and overseen by the Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, the state has recorded a total of 2,613 arrests in less than a month.

The operation, which spanned all 28 police districts of Punjab, yielded substantial results with the seizure of 5.2 kilograms of heroin, 10 kilograms of opium, and over ₹2.2 lakh in cash suspected to be linked to drug trafficking activities. “This coordinated action demonstrates our unwavering commitment to making Punjab a drug-free state,” stated a senior police official during the press briefing.

A Massive, Multi-Agency Effort
In a display of meticulous planning and robust law enforcement, over 250 police teams comprising more than 1,700 personnel were mobilized. Supervised by 98 gazetted officers, these teams executed raids at 536 different locations across the state. Their relentless efforts resulted in the filing of 51 first information reports (FIRs) and the screening of 601 individuals deemed suspicious, marking one of the most extensive crackdowns on the drug trade in Punjab’s recent history.

A Three-Pronged Strategy for Long-Term Impact
The state government’s approach is not limited to enforcement alone. In addition to cracking down on drug traffickers, Punjab’s strategy embraces ‘De-addiction’ and ‘Prevention’ initiatives under its comprehensive Enforcement, Deaddiction, and Prevention (EDP) framework. As part of the rehabilitation drive, the police have successfully convinced four individuals to voluntarily enter de-addiction and rehabilitation programs, aiming to address the broader issue of substance abuse in the community.

Government Leadership and Oversight
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has left no stone unturned in his fight against drugs, instructing senior police officials—including Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents—to work relentlessly towards a drug-free Punjab. Reinforcing this commitment, the Punjab government has established a five-member Cabinet Sub Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, tasked with closely monitoring the progress of the anti-drug initiatives.

The state’s comprehensive efforts to dismantle drug networks have garnered both local and national attention, heralding a new era of law enforcement and public health intervention. As Punjab continues to wage this multifaceted war against drugs, community leaders and government officials alike remain optimistic about paving the way for a safer, healthier future for the state.
