Punjab Prepares for Electric Future with New EV Technician Courses

by Manjari Singh

In response to the Centre’s accelerated push for electric vehicles (EVs), Punjab’s Technical Education and Industrial Training Department has launched a new initiative aimed at equipping the next generation of EV technicians. The department has introduced a specialized EV mechanic course across eight Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the state, reflecting a proactive approach to meet future industry demands.

As students flock to the government-run ITIs for the ongoing admission session, the new course is already generating significant interest. The department has allocated 384 seats for the program across the eight institutes, signaling a strong commitment to aligning educational offerings with industry needs. “Our focus is on industry-driven courses and preparing students for the evolving skill sets required in today’s job market,” said Amit Talwar, Director of Technical Education. “We are dedicated to transforming ITIs into key resource centers that supply a skilled workforce for various trades.”

In an effort to enhance the quality of education and training, the department is collaborating with major vehicle manufacturers, including Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki. This partnership aims to secure substantial upgrades to ITI infrastructure, supported by an anticipated Rs 8 crore investment from the Central Government’s budgetary allocation for skills development. “We are committed to ensuring that the course content and design meet the evolving needs of the industry,” added Talwar. “With the Centre focusing on creating a supportive regulatory framework for EV innovation, we anticipate a significant rise in demand for skilled EV technicians.”

Industry officials project that the EV sector will generate approximately 20 million jobs by 2030, highlighting a 40 percent increase in demand for EV-related skills. This surge underscores the critical need for specialized technicians capable of supporting the rapid growth and technological advancements within the electric vehicle market.

By preparing students with relevant, industry-aligned skills, Punjab’s Technical Education and Industrial Training Department is positioning itself at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow is equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of this dynamic industry.
