Ketamine Queen Among Charges in Matthew Perry’s Tragic Overdose Case

by Antariksh Singh

In a high-profile case that has gripped international attention, Jasveen Sangha, infamously dubbed the “ketamine queen,” stands as a central figure in the tragic overdose death of beloved “Friends” star Matthew Perry. Sangha, a co-defendant alongside two California doctors, faces serious allegations of illegally distributing the powerful anesthetic drug ketamine, which ultimately contributed to Perry’s untimely death in October 2023.

Dr. Mark Chavez of San Diego, one of the accused, recently pleaded guilty to charges of illicit ketamine distribution in a Los Angeles court. As part of a plea agreement, Chavez may receive a reduced sentence of up to 10 years, with sentencing slated for April. This development casts a spotlight on Sangha, who has steadfastly maintained a not guilty plea and is scheduled to go on trial in March alongside Dr. Salvador Plasencia.

Authorities have revealed that Sangha played a pivotal role in the distribution chain, acting as an illicit supplier of ketamine to Plasencia, who then administered the drug to Perry. The legal proceedings have uncovered alarming details, including text messages where Plasencia referred to Perry derogatorily while negotiating the drug’s cost: “I wonder how much this moron will pay.”

Sangha’s involvement has raised concerns about the accessibility and regulation of controlled substances, even beyond international borders. Known locally as a prominent figure in the underground drug scene, Sangha’s case underscores the global nature of the opioid crisis and the far-reaching impacts of illegal drug distribution networks.

Matthew Perry, famed for his role as Chandler Bing on the iconic 1990s sitcom “Friends,” had a well-documented struggle with substance abuse. His death was attributed to the acute effects of ketamine, among other factors, leading to his tragic drowning in a hot tub. The case has sparked widespread discussions about mental health and the importance of stringent controls over prescription medications.

Jasveen Sangha’s trial is anticipated to shed further light on the mechanisms of drug distribution and the responsibilities of medical professionals in preventing such tragedies. As the legal battle unfolds, the community in Punjab remains vigilant, recognizing the universal challenges posed by substance abuse and the imperative for robust regulatory frameworks.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the case, drawing parallels to regional drug-related issues and reinforcing the need for community awareness and preventive measures. The outcome of Sangha’s trial could have significant implications for both international drug enforcement and local policies aimed at combating substance abuse.
