In a dramatic turn of events at the revered Golden Temple complex on Wednesday, the quick thinking and bravery of local police officers prevented a tragic assassination of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was engaged in his duties as a ‘sewadar’ at the temple’s entrance.
The attempted attack was orchestrated by Narain Singh Chaura, a militant associated with Khalistan, who emerged just meters away from Badal. Brandishing a pistol, Chaura aimed his weapon at the SAD chief. However, before he could discharge the firearm, ASI Jasbir Singh, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, swiftly apprehended the assailant. The confrontation saw Chaura’s gun fire a shot into the air, averting immediate danger.
Joining ASI Jasbir Singh were fellow officers Rashpal Singh and Parminder Singh, whose coordinated efforts ensured Chaura was subdued without further incident. The collective action of these three officers was pivotal in neutralizing the threat posed by the militant.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar commended the officers’ decisive intervention, highlighting that Chaura was already entangled in multiple legal cases under the Arms and Explosives Act. “The exceptional vigilance and teamwork of our officers have successfully dismantled Chaura’s malicious intentions. He is currently under interrogation as we investigate the broader motives behind this attack,” Bhullar stated.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, who labeled the attack as an affront to those dedicated to ‘sewa’ within the Golden Temple complex. He has called for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and to bring all responsible parties to justice.
