Fatehgarh Sahib Embraces Green Power: A New Era in Sustainable Energy

by Manjari Singh

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions, Fatehgarh Sahib celebrates the inauguration of its revamped 10MW Biomass Power Plant in Jalkheri village. This momentous occasion marks a pivotal shift towards green power generation, heralding a brighter, cleaner future for Punjab.

Under the leadership of Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO, the state government proudly unveiled the upgraded facility, powered entirely by paddy straw. Equipped with cutting-edge boilers imported from Denmark, the plant stands as a beacon of advanced technology in biomass energy. It is poised to produce 10MW of eco-friendly electricity, sufficient to meet the needs of thousands of homes across the region.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister ETO emphasized the plant’s role in combating the environmental menace of stubble burning. Annually consuming approximately 1 lakh tonnes of paddy straw, the facility will effectively curtail stubble burning in nearly 50,000 acres of farmland. This proactive measure not only mitigates air pollution but also underscores Punjab’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project promises a robust economic impact, generating direct and indirect employment opportunities for 400-500 individuals. This infusion of jobs is expected to stimulate economic growth in the surrounding communities, fostering a sustainable cycle of prosperity.

The Biomass Power Plant represents more than just a technological feat; it embodies Punjab’s dedication to sustainable energy practices. By harnessing locally abundant resources like paddy straw, the state reduces its reliance on fossil fuels, contributing significantly to energy security and independence.

The project operates under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), effective from June 21, ensuring stable electricity supply to the region. Post-PPA tenure, the plant will seamlessly transition to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), ensuring continued benefits for the community.

As Fatehgarh Sahib takes this pioneering step towards a greener tomorrow, the inauguration of the Jalkheri Biomass Power Plant stands as a testament to Punjab’s resolve to lead in sustainable energy innovation. With its environmental stewardship and economic foresight, this initiative sets a commendable precedent for regions globally aspiring towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
