In a pioneering effort to curb drug abuse among the region’s youth, organizers are set to burn effigies representing drugs alongside traditional figures like Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhkaran at over 200 venues across Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan during the upcoming Dussehra celebrations next Saturday.
The initiative, spearheaded by senior members of the Rotary International District under the leadership of District Governor Dr. Sandeep Chauhan, marks the first coordinated simultaneous burning of drug-related effigies on such a large scale. This symbolic gesture aims to highlight the perils of drug addiction by integrating awareness messages into the widely celebrated Ramlila performances during Navratri.
Amjad Ali, Chief Adviser of the Rotary District, emphasized the collaborative nature of the campaign. “We have mobilized office-bearers from approximately 120 Rotary clubs across Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan to work closely with local administrations and Dussehra committees. Our goal is to ensure that the message against drug abuse resonates strongly with the youth during these festivities,” Ali stated.
The campaign was officially launched in Ahmedgarh, where Rotary enthusiasts, led by President Venu Gopal Sharma and Secretary Ashok Verma, unveiled the first effigy at the Ramlila stage. The inauguration and conclusion of the launch event were officiated by DSP Rajan Sharma and Executive Magistrate Parveen Sharma, underscoring the community’s commitment to the cause.
SSP Malerkotla Gagan Ajit Singh lauded the initiative, noting, “Our circle officers in Malerkotla, Amargarh, and Ahmedgarh have been actively involved in this project. We are dedicated to supporting efforts that educate and protect our youth from the dangers of drug abuse.”
Dr. Chauhan highlighted the extensive support from Rotary members, stating, “Nearly all office-bearers from our 120 clubs have pledged their support for this campaign. We anticipate that over 200 Dussehra venues will participate in the simultaneous burning of drug effigies next Saturday. To ensure safety and manageability, organizers have been advised to keep the effigies modest in size.”
By intertwining traditional festivities with a strong anti-drug message, the Rotary International District aims to create a lasting impact on the community, fostering a safer and healthier environment for the region’s young population.
