Crime and Gang Rapes at Their Peak in Pakistan

by Sudeep Singh

The increasing number of gang rape cases in Pakistan indicates that, whether or not Pakistanis have learned anything else from their ancestors, they have certainly learned this—leading to such horrific incidents. History bears witness that during the times of Ahmad Shah Abdali and other Mughal rulers, women were subjected to sexual exploitation. They were taken to marketplaces and auctioned off. The only difference is that back then, these atrocities were mostly committed against women of other religions, especially Hindus. But today, their descendants do not even spare women of their own religion.

This raises a serious concern that in such circumstances, women and daughters belonging to Hindu and Sikh communities are absolutely not safe.

A report from Pakistan clearly indicates that sexual crimes are rapidly increasing. The highest number of gang rape cases have emerged from Islamabad. Across the country, there has been an alarming rise in cases of murder, rape, and abduction.

Pakistan is currently grappling with a surge in crime. Especially the figures for sexual crimes are quite terrifying. Islamabad, the nation’s capital, is witnessing the worst situation. Despite the presence of strict Sharia laws, dozens of people here are found involved in such crimes every day—offenses that, under Sharia, are punishable by up to 100 lashes.

The report reveals that in the past year alone, 11,074 murders, 2,142 gang rapes, and 4,472 cases of forced sexual intercourse were reported across Pakistan. The highest number of incidents were reported from Punjab province, where there were 4,908 murders and 2,046 gang rapes. This clearly shows that a major portion of Pakistan’s population is engulfed in crime, and the law and order situation is in shambles.
