Brampton Temple Attack: Canadian Police Officer Gets Clean Chit

by Manjari Singh

A Sergeant with Peel Regional Police, Harinder Sohi, has been exonerated following an investigation into his involvement in a violent pro-Khalistan protest that targeted a Hindu temple in Brampton over the Diwali weekend.

The incident unfolded on November 3 when pro-Khalistani demonstrators stormed the Hindu Sabha temple during a public camp organized by the Indian High Commission. The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in attacks on devotees and raising significant safety concerns in the community.

Videos circulating online captured Sergeant Sohi, who was off duty and in plain clothes at the time, holding a Khalistani flag amidst the chaos. The footage also showed aggressive behavior as protesters brandished weapons and chanted anti-India slogans. These images led to public outcry and the suspension of Sohi pending further investigation.

However, Peel Regional Police have now cleared Sohi, stating that he acted within the lawful execution of his duties. In a detailed statement, the police revealed that Sohi was actively involved in attempting to disarm individuals who were resisting and becoming confrontational. “Following an investigation, it was determined that the officer depicted in the video was attempting to disarm an individual who refused to surrender their weapon and became confrontational, and accordingly acted within the lawful execution of his duties,” the statement read.
