In a dramatic turn of events, Tarlochan Singh, a prominent Granthi at the Baba Deep Singh Gurudwara on Oakland Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, has been expelled from his position following grave allegations of sexual misconduct. Singh, who had served at the Gurudwara, was reportedly involved in a disturbing incident where a woman, allegedly the victim of his abuse, became pregnant.
Singh’s expulsion came after the Gurudwara’s management and community members discovered these serious allegations. The reaction was swift and severe, with Singh being physically assaulted by members of the Gurudwara before being removed from his duties. This incident has sparked outrage and distress within the Sikh community in Birmingham.
Prior to this incident, Singh had been a controversial figure due to his vocal support for Khalistani separatism. At various events held at the Baba Deep Singh Gurudwara, Singh had been seen openly advocating for Khalistan, the proposed independent Sikh state, and making derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His slogans, such as “Raaj Karega Khalsa” and “Khalistan Zindabad,” were reportedly accompanied by inflammatory language.
Singh’s tenure as a Granthi extended beyond his time at Baba Deep Singh Gurudwara. He had also served for 17 years at Singh Sabha Gurudwara in Southall, where similar issues of controversy and political statements had been noted.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions within the Sikh diaspora, reflecting broader debates about political and religious identity. The Gurudwara’s response to these allegations, including the physical altercation and immediate expulsion, underscores the community’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and divisive rhetoric.
As investigations continue, the incident has sparked a broader discussion about the role of religious leaders in maintaining ethical standards and the impact of political ideologies on religious institutions.
