In a landmark event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the new terminal building at Adampur Airport, marking a significant milestone for the region. Adampur, nestled in the heart of Doaba, now boasts the distinction of being home to the region’s first and only airport.

The inauguration ceremony not only symbolizes the opening of a new infrastructure but also heralds the eagerly awaited revival of flight operations from the airport. Previously limited by its modest facilities, the old terminal at Adampur Airport covered a mere 375 square meters and could accommodate up to 30,000 passengers annually. However, the new terminal, sprawling over 5,000 square meters, boasts a capacity to handle a staggering 5 lakh passengers every year.

One of the key highlights of the modern terminal is its emphasis on sustainability and efficiency. Equipped with an insulated roofing system, solar panels, cutting-edge lighting solutions, rainwater harvesting facilities, and a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), the new terminal underscores a commitment to environmental responsibility and energy conservation.

MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, advocating for local sentiments, appealed to Prime Minister Modi to consider naming the airport after Guru Ravidas, a revered figure in the region’s cultural and religious heritage.

Senior officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have expressed optimism regarding the resumption of flight services, targeting a restart by the end of March. Prior to the pandemic-induced hiatus, Adampur Airport had facilitated flights to major destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. The interruption caused by the pandemic disrupted these vital air links, but efforts are underway to restore connectivity.

Pushpendra Kumar, the airport director at Adampur, revealed that proposals have been received from two prominent airlines, Spice Jet and Star India, expressing interest in resuming flight operations from the airport. This signals a promising future for Adampur Airport, with increased connectivity and economic opportunities on the horizon.

As the new terminal at Adampur Airport ushers in a new era of growth and connectivity for the region, it stands as a testament to the power of infrastructure development in unlocking the potential of underserved communities. With its modern amenities and sustainable design, the airport is poised to become a vital gateway for travelers and a catalyst for economic development in the vibrant Doaba region.
