A Thali of Hope: How JFFL is Transforming Lives in Ludhiana

by Parminder Singh Sodhi

In the bustling streets of Ludhiana, a beacon of hope shines bright every day from noon to mid-afternoon. Jaganath Food For Life (JFFL), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving nutritious meals to those in need, has become an integral part of the community since its inception in 2017.

Founded by Satish Kumar Gupta and Naveen Bhatia, JFFL was inspired by a similar successful initiative they observed in Varanasi. Driven by a passion to alleviate hunger and promote healthy eating, the duo launched their mission in 2018, focusing on providing fresh, satvik, and home-cooked meals to the underprivileged segments of Ludhiana.

What sets JFFL apart is its unique pricing strategy. Each meal is offered at a nominal cost of just Rs 10, a deliberate choice to eliminate the stigma often associated with receiving free food. “The fixed price was introduced to encourage people to value the food, and often those in genuine need are given meals for free,” explains Gupta. This approach not only ensures that food is not wasted but also fosters a sense of dignity among the recipients.

Today, JFFL operates 20 booths across the city, serving over 3,000 people daily. The organization’s operations are headquartered in the kitchen of the Lord Jagannath temple, where every meal is first offered to God before being distributed to the public. Anil Saluja, who oversees the food section, shares, “During the pandemic, we served free meals to nearly 30,000 people. Apart from the booths, we also provide regular meals at three schools and continue to offer food to those in need.”

The impact of JFFL extends beyond just providing meals. It fosters a sense of community and support, as evidenced by the stories of those who benefit from its services. Sunita, a worker at the Mini Secretariat, recounts her experience: “I came to work without carrying lunch and saw that food was available for only Rs 10. It was simple, yet delicious, and I didn’t hesitate to buy the thali.”

Volunteers like Manpreet play a crucial role in the organization’s success. “It gives me immense pleasure to see the satisfaction on people’s faces after they have their meal. There is no greater happiness than feeding the hungry,” she says, highlighting the personal fulfillment that comes from contributing to such a noble cause.

JFFL’s booths are strategically open from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., or until the food runs out, ensuring that anyone hungry has access to a warm meal. This consistent availability has garnered widespread appreciation from the community, particularly among those in dire need.

As Ludhiana continues to grow, organizations like Jaganath Food For Life exemplify the power of compassion and collective effort in addressing social challenges. With unwavering dedication, JFFL not only feeds thousands each day but also nourishes the spirit of a community united in kindness and support.
