by Dr. Jasneet Bedi

In a bid to preserve the rich cultural heritage and linguistic identity of Punjab, the globally renowned World Food Prize Winner, Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush, has taken a significant step forward. Professor at the University of California-Davis, Dr. Khush has embarked on a mission to promote the mother language Punjabi, particularly among Punjabi women settled in the United States.

The initiative centers around showcasing traditional artwork that highlights the significance of the Punjabi language, with a special focus on the Gurmukhi script. Dr. Khush, recognizing the importance of cultural preservation, has championed the efforts of Harpreet Sandhu, a former Additional Advocate General of Punjab, author, and nature artist, who has compiled a stunning collection of Punjabi alphabets printed on stoles.

These stoles serve not only as pieces of art but also as educational tools, aiming to familiarize the younger generation with their mother tongue. Dr. Khush emphasized the importance of instilling a sense of pride in Punjabi culture and language, urging the people of Punjab to prioritize their mother tongue.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Khush highlighted the commendable work done by Harpreet Sandhu, emphasizing its role in promoting Punjabi language and culture within society. He underscored the significance of preserving cultural heritage, noting that it plays a vital role in keeping the new generation deeply connected to their roots.

Furthermore, Dr. Khush stressed that Punjabi is a remarkably expressive language that deserves widespread recognition and promotion. By encouraging the adoption of Punjabi among Punjabi diaspora, particularly in the USA, he aims to ensure that future generations remain firmly rooted in their community and heritage.

This initiative not only serves as a celebration of Punjabi language and culture but also as a testament to the enduring efforts of individuals like Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush and Harpreet Sandhu in safeguarding linguistic diversity and cultural identity in an increasingly globalized world. As Punjabi communities around the globe continue to flourish, initiatives like these will undoubtedly play a crucial role in preserving their rich heritage for generations to come.
