Historic Shaheedi Jor Mela Kicks Off with Grandeur and Devotion

by Parminder Singh Sodhi

The state’s most anticipated historical event, the three-day Shaheedi Jor Mela, commenced today amidst vibrant religious ceremonies and deep-seated devotion. This annual gathering honors the sacrifice of Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, the valiant young sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru.

The festivities were inaugurated with the commencement of the Akhand Path of the Guru Granth Sahib at Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup, the sacred site where the two Sahibzadas were laid to rest. Bhai Harpal Singh, the esteemed Head Granthi of Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, led the Ardas, invoking blessings for the devotees present.

Key dignitaries, including Deputy Commissioner Sona Thind, Senior Superintendent of Police Ravjot Grewal, Assistant District Commissioner Geetika Singh, and numerous devotees, attended the opening ceremonies, underscoring the event’s significance. The two historic gurdwaras, Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup, were bustling with devotees on the first day, with expectations of nearly three million attendees over the course of the mela.

Political leaders were prominently present, with Congress stalwarts such as Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Fatehgarh Sahib MP Amar Singh, along with representatives from major parties, gathering at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to pay their respects to the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas.

In an inspiring display of community spirit, over 500 makeshift langars have been set up, diverging from the Akal Takht Jathedar’s call for simplicity. These kitchens are offering a variety of dishes, including sandwiches, burgers, kheer, jalebis, and fresh juices, catering to the diverse tastes of the thousands in attendance.

Deputy Commissioner Thind also unveiled an exhibition showcasing the state government’s accomplishments and various public welfare initiatives. Additionally, she launched a fleet of mini buses and e-rickshaws, providing free transportation for senior citizens and women from different locations to the gurdwaras, enhancing accessibility for all devotees.

To ensure a serene and focused environment, all sources of entertainment such as wine shops, circuses, and swings have been shuttered for the duration of the mela. Comprehensive amenities have been arranged, including night shelters, continuous power supply, clean drinking water, mobile toilets, and round-the-clock medical facilities, ensuring the comfort and safety of all participants.

Security measures have been meticulously planned and implemented, with DIG HS Bhullar and SSP Ravjot Grewal confirming robust arrangements. Advanced surveillance through drones and CCTV cameras is actively monitoring the event to prevent any disturbances.

Traffic management has been streamlined with the identification of nine diversion routes and alternative pathways. Moreover, 20 complimentary parking zones and three temporary bus stands have been established to facilitate smooth movement for the devotees, ensuring an organized and hassle-free experience throughout the mela.

The Shaheedi Jor Mela stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Sahibzadas and the collective spirit of the community, blending reverence, celebration, and civic responsibility in a grand historical observance.
