Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Raj Chouhan, visited the Golden Temple on Thursday to pay his respects, accompanied by members of his family. His brother Surinderjit, wife Inder Chauhan and daughter Amrita Chauhan were present during the visit to the revered Sikh shrine.

Speaking on the occasion, Chouhan said the visit held special significance for him as he had earlier been invited by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to attend the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. However, due to his official responsibilities and the ongoing session of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly at the time, he was unable to attend the commemorative event.

“Once the Assembly session concluded, I felt it was important to come here and bow before Guru Sahib,” Chouhan said. He described the Golden Temple as a spiritual centre that transcends boundaries and inspires values of harmony and brotherhood among people across the world.

Chouhan also expressed his gratitude to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami for extending the invitation to participate in the historic centenary celebrations.

Several SGPC officials and members were present to receive the visiting dignitary. Among them were Dharam Prachar Committee member Ajaib Singh Abhiasi, secretary Balwinder Singh Kahlwan, manager Jaspal Singh and information officer Randhir Singh. Canada-based community member Balbir Singh and others also attended the occasion.
