In a significant step towards strengthening the educational and professional prospects of young soldiers, the Sikh Regiment of the Indian Army has entered into a partnership with Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, aimed at providing higher education and skill-development opportunities to Agniveers during their military service.

The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is designed to help Agniveers pursue academic qualifications alongside their operational responsibilities. Under the arrangement, soldiers enrolled under the Agnipath scheme will be able to undertake short-term diploma courses as well as full-fledged undergraduate programmes tailored to support their long-term career growth.

According to defence officials, the initiative will offer six-month diploma courses and three-year degree programmes in disciplines such as Arts, Commerce and Computer Applications. The objective is to equip Agniveers with academic credentials and practical skills that will enhance their effectiveness within the armed forces while also preparing them for opportunities beyond military service.

A defence spokesperson said the programme reflects the regiment’s focus on the overall development of its personnel and aligns with the national vision of creating a skilled and future-ready youth workforce. By integrating education with military training, the initiative seeks to broaden career pathways and improve employability for soldiers after their tenure.

The Sikh Regiment, one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most distinguished infantry formations, has a history dating back to 1846. Over the years, it has earned a reputation for valour and service, and currently consists of 20 regular infantry battalions along with three Territorial Army battalions. The regiment recruits exclusively from the Jat Sikh community.

Military officials noted that the partnership underscores the regiment’s commitment to nurturing talent and supporting soldiers throughout their professional journey. Guided by its long-standing ethos of selfless service, the regiment continues to invest in programmes that contribute to the personal and professional advancement of its troops.

The initiative comes in the context of the Agnipath recruitment scheme introduced by the Centre in 2022. Under the scheme, Agniveers serve in the armed forces for four years, after which a select proportion are inducted into the regular cadre while others exit with a financial package and acquired military experience. Discussions are currently underway regarding possible changes to the scheme, including proposals to extend the duration of service and increase the number of personnel retained in permanent roles.

Officials believe that educational partnerships such as the one with GNDU will play a vital role in ensuring that Agniveers leave service with enhanced qualifications, greater confidence and improved career prospects, whether they continue in uniform or transition to civilian professions.
