In a significant step towards combating substance abuse among young people, the Bathinda district administration has announced plans to establish sports teams across all identified drug-sensitive areas of the district. The initiative aims to channel the energy of youngsters into constructive activities and reduce their vulnerability to narcotics.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) chaired by Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman. Officials discussed measures to strengthen community engagement and expand anti-drug interventions in the district’s 27 recognised drug hotspots.
Speaking at the meeting, Dhiman said the administration, in collaboration with the District Sports Office and local police, would encourage participation in team sports such as volleyball, handball and basketball. He noted that regular involvement in sports could help young people develop discipline, confidence and a healthier lifestyle while keeping them away from harmful influences.
The district administration believes that creating organised sporting opportunities within vulnerable neighbourhoods will provide a positive alternative for children and teenagers who may otherwise be exposed to drug-related activities.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies highlighted ongoing efforts against drug trafficking in the district. Bathinda SP (City) Narinder Singh stated that during May alone, police registered 144 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 187 individuals allegedly involved in drug-related offences.
According to police data, authorities seized 1.64 kilograms of heroin, 121.9 kilograms of poppy husk, 1.01 kilograms of cannabis, and more than 6,400 sedative pills and capsules. Investigators also recovered ₹8.25 lakh believed to be proceeds from the illegal drug trade.
Apart from enforcement measures, officials said awareness campaigns continue to be a key component of the district’s anti-drug strategy. The police, in partnership with the Education Department, have organised seminars, lectures and various competitions, including slogan-writing and painting contests, to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse.
District officials expressed hope that the combined approach of strict enforcement, public awareness and greater participation in sports would help create a healthier environment for Bathinda’s youth and strengthen the fight against the drug menace.
